A pair of Class 507 emus overran through the buffer stops at Kirkby station, and derailed on Saturday 20 March 2021. Parts of the platforms, and the walkway between the "Merseyrail" & "Northern" platforms were damaged.
According to reports on BBC Radio Merseyside, the "Merseyrail" platform is expected to reopen sometime next week (22 to 27 March), but it will take a few more days before access is restored to the "Northern" platform.
