Clan Line tops Whiteball at 68 mph eastbound - Posted: June 4, 2018 - 3:00 PM Quote and reply
On yesterday's Torbay Express preserved Merchant Navy Class locomotive 35028 "Clan Line" topped Whiteball bank on the long climb from Exeter at a minimum of 68 mph. Load 12 coaches, 430 tons tare - 465 tons gross.

The pass to pass time from Exeter St David's (north station footbridge at 193m 72c) to Whiteball (overbridge at 174m 02) was 17m 08s.

This is thought to be a record for steam with this load.

I would like to do some horsepower calcs. I have a copy of the Ian Allan Gradient Profiles, but does anyone have access to any more detailed gradient profiles?

I will browse through my various performance books to see if any average gradients are quoted for the lengthy climb from Cowley Bridge, Hele and Tiverton Jn. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated!

Sean

I have managed to find the Board of Trade's Inspector's report which advises the gradients between Beam Bridge and Exeter St David's

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=m3oSAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA419&lpg=PA419&dq=whiteball+average+gradient&source=bl&ots=q8VGtF-RPF&sig=eJFK689DBabhKVfSY8-eZokECG8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiW2PPDsLrbAhUFasAKHf13BnU4ChDoATABegQICBAB#v=onepage&q=whiteball%20average%20gradient&f=false

From this I have deduced the average gradient between Tiverton Parkway SFB and Whiteball OB is 1 in 137.43, and between Pugham PC and Whiteball OB is 1 in 116.66.

Will keep searching for similar from Taunton up to Beam Bridge!

Dear Sean,
Sorry pressed wrong button without posting na message. Great effort on he up last Sunday with Clan Line - take your point about highest speed with a similar load but 60009 had 70mph there with one vehicle fewer having started from No. 6 at Exeter in 1995- which I see you were on board from your log on the website. Wondered what your thoughts were about the relative merits of these two. We'll ignore the post Whiteball max. I knew the inspector very well. Asked him what on earth he was doing. He replied, "What have you heard?" I said 95mph and he looked relieved- thought he had done 100mph.
