From a GW driver on UK Railway
The changeover (electric/diesel) switches are on the cab desk. The traction manual says that the changeover should be automatic and can be performed at linespeed. The automatic system will be by a combination of track-mounted balises and also
GPS; it can be manually overridden. If the automatic system detects that changeover has been unsuccessful after 30 seconds, a warning is issued to the driver to stop the train immediately and drop the pantograph manually - this implies 2 miles of normally-unused wires just in case.
