Cumbrian Coast haulage change soon? - Posted: January 25, 2018 - 1:41 PM Quote and reply
The new Modern Railways shows a class 68 on trial on the Cumbrian Coast Line with a view to deposing the unreliable class 37s from the service. Various rumours abound regarding their introduction- one diagram next week?

I gather one diagram will be 68s but they have to be top and tailed.
One rumour was originally DRS wanted 57s but the unions kicked up so why now 68s.
Also it will have to be DRS drivers until Northern Drivers are trained and Barrow and Workington have about 90 Drivers!!
Is this just a short term measure until Manchester to Blackpool is electrified and then some spare 156s?

My post yesterday should have read about 90 Drivers split between Barrow and Workington not each. Last summerI was talking to a Loco Inspector (or whatever they are called today) at Preston who was training a new Driver on the 10.03 to Carlisle he told me a lot of the failures of the 37s were to certain Drivers who didnt want to drive 37s. He told me that originally when Northern had to train Drivers for the 37s he had suggested that two links were set up at both Workington and Barrow on which Drivers could apply for the link to work 37s but this was turned down.
Mind you at Norwich my local line they have a mixed traction link who drive everything including the 37s most if them love the 37s but some of the Drivers are completely useless and drop time every trip!!

The class 68's running in top n tail mode, taking over one of the diagrams has been put back a week and will start next Monday(5th Feb 2018). The other diagram is remaining as a 37 for the time being.

It now looks as if Class 68 haulage on the Cumbrian Coast will not now occur; various reasons have been quoted - I do not know which - if any - are correct.

Class 37 are expected to remain until replaced by cascaded dmus, probably in 2019. Note that from the timetable changes in May 2018, loco haulage is expected to be confined to the Barrow - Carlisle section only.
