A GWR driver comments:

Each driving vehicle has a pantograph. The default for a double set is for the front and rear pans to be raised; if two pans are raised 5 cars apart there’s a 100mph speed restriction, and it pans are raised on adjacent vehicles there’s an 80mph restriction. On a single set, 5 or 9 car, the default is to run using the front pantograph, because certain OLE-related faults have a much less restrictive rule if the single pan being used is on one of the front three vehicles (loss of line light which won’t reset becomes ‘coast to a halt at a convenient location’ rather than ‘drop and stop’).
