The two 5 car class 801/1s each have one diesel engine and these were fired up producing a speed of 73 mph on the level, dropping to 66 over Pipers Wood and increasing to 82 on the descent before sigs intervened. Not bad at all! IU 04.08.20 |

In standby diesel mode , full length 9-car 'electric' Azumas have both a lower power-to-weight ratio and increased auxiliaries to supply and I predict a balancing speed closer to 60 mph. Hence would expect a lot of running in the speed range 50-60 mph (which is still a useful capability to have). David Stannard RPS Committee - Technical |
