I noticed last week the X country HSTS were not being used (could have been longer?). I caught 10.44 York-Bristol last Wed 220015 and then 09.41 ex Newcastle to Durham last Friday which both are booked HST and was 220026. Students going home day from Newcastle let alone Durham!!! Full and standing and conductor apologising no reservations as it should have been 7 coach train. Isnt there something called Covid going around??
At Durham Conductor said HSTs were out of service.

Any news?

In general not used due to their operational expense but were used on Sunday 5th December.

I think it might be due to the expiration of a rest day working agreement between XC and ASLEF at the end of November. They may expect that managing a “Voyager only” operation gives them better reliability, but resulting in less “doubling up” and more overcrowding.

The problem is more apparent on secondary routes, where there are planned cancellations, and there is a four-hour gap in the hourly Nottingham-Cardiff service
